Jeff has a co-worker named, Randall (that’s what Jeff calls him, but he does prefer Randy). Jeff always tells me about Randall and his wife, Heather, heading somewhere tropical and awesome like Hawaii, or New Zealand or heading out camping in their luxury trailer. It’s how the others live… and here’s the catch, they don’t have kids and that makes them… DINK’s (double income no kids). We are occasionally jealous of this free state of affairs.
Whenever we find ourselves in a moment of chaos, such as during Connor’s 10th tantrum, or Kai’s 20th meltdown or maybe it comes when we just wanna pee on our own, drink a beer on our own or watch the Olympics without wiping a nose etc., Jeff and I catch ourselves looking at each other, sighing and saying, “I bet Randall’s just chillin’ right now”, or “I wonder what Randall’s doing?” or, “I wish I was Randall right now”. It’s become a running joke between us lately (p.s. Randall doesn’t know).
So we got our chance to be, “Randall and Heather” this past weekend.
Jeff and I went away last Saturday night. It was the first time we’d been away alone, together, just the two of us… since before Kai was born. That’s gotta be some kinda record. Not the kinda record you want to brag about, but definitely something to talk about (behind our backs).
We went cross country skiing before treating ourselves to a night at the Chateau Lake Louise. It was awesome, and awesomely cold too. It was a brisk, -20⁰C when we went skiing and -32⁰C on Sunday morning. We weren’t too bothered though, drinking hot chocolate, soaking up the hot tub (laughing at the families all around us) and indulging in a fancy bottle of red (Thanks Kim!). It was divine. It also took us most of the 24 hours to get accustomed to not hearing any little people and not thinking about any little person’s needs… it was glorious!
We drove back on Sunday and it was a beautiful sunny drive… but like a shock from static electricity (I literally got one of those too), I jumped right back into parenting by taking Kai to a Sunday afternoon birthday party. Kai loved it and it was fun but let’s just say, I was wondering what Randall was doing.
