Some history: Our garden is MASSIVE! In fact, this is an understatement. It’s seriously beyond what is considered appropriate or realistic for an urban food forest. We were excited the 1st year, overwhelmed the 2nd year, ready to pave it over the 3rd year and the 4th year, we’ve tried a “sink or swim” or "survival of the fittest" method with the seeds/plants. Each year we’ve had different successes; things that worked last summer, didn't work this summer and things that have never amounted to much, grew in massive size and quantity... keeping it ever interesting in the 'garden of Q'.
This 4th year, was yet another year of random growth but this year we were pleasantly surprised with what survived under dismal circumstances. We are proud with what we’ve sowed, so far including:
-green beans
-tiny tomatoes
-a few snow peas (a poor display of survival this year)
-rainbow swiss chard (what does one do with a billion bushels of swiss chard?)
-spinach galore the first round (but a dismal performance on the second round)
-green lettuce
-beets (like 2, the size of my pinky fingernail)
-strawberries (eaten by the squirrels/mice before harvesting this year! NOTE: need survival solution!!)
-potatoes were a flop this year but last year, we ate the best little tiny organic potatoes ( apparently moldy, green potatoes don’t sprout- probably best for all parties involved!!)
-SUPER zucchini’s this year!!!!!
Here’s some proof that “it” happened and the animated happy snaps of Kai tell the story of excitement. How can one not resume the garden of Q next summer? Especially with the potential of the littlest Q to terrorize the squirrels and mice thereby protecting our harvest.
So we’re not done harvesting but with Kai being so excited, we just had to share our pics.
