Connor’s been causing quite a stir at day home. I heard a few stories over the last week and I am afraid what this might mean for the coming months.
Two weeks ago, I was told he stole Nathan’s toy (a boy the same age as Connor) and then he turned around and sat on him! So matter of fact-ly! Like salt in the wound… Connor was taking control!
This week, Nathan and Connor got into the craft cupboard and then the book shelf and spread it all around. Mischievous boys!
Connor doesn’t say much… he screams and he squeals until you respond and get him what he wants. The longer you take, the greater the ear drum damage you incur. I have tried. As most of you know, I am an OT who works with children and I know how to get kids talking, or at least responding appropriately, so it’s only fitting that my child does not follow any principals of child development that I pride my work upon but I digress…
At day home, he plays with the dog as much as he can… he shouts some rubbish sounds at the dog and the dog sits. Then Connor throws the ball and the dog retrieves it, sitting on command again. This goes on for hours I’m told. So I’m thinking, why would Connor speak? The dog responds to him, his parents respond to him and his brother responds to him… why fix something that’s not broken?
Connor’s also been getting cute around the house. He’s all smiles and chuckles for Dad and Mom (except when you say no) and at mealtimes, he wants to be a big boy. He won’t accept food unless it looks just like yours, with a big plate, an adult fork and cut the same as everyone else’s. He will also suddenly decide he doesn’t want his but he’d like to have mine! (Mom’s is better!) For anyone really wondering why this happens, it’s based on evolutionary thinking… if my Mom is eating it, it’s not poisonous, so I’ll have hers. Brilliant and annoying. My meals are cold and half eaten by the time I get to eating.
So he’s a bit of a terror but we love him all the same. He likes to get in Kai’s face and steal Kai’s toy of the moment. It will be interesting as this habit evolves. But for the most part, the 2 boys love each other and play together more and more each day.
