I awoke today not fully prepared for what the day would bring. It seemed like an ordinary Sunday but there was this feeling in the house, an energy, in fact it seemed to be more Q energy than I thought was possible.
Connor woke up early, Kai followed right behind and Jeff was playing possum again. The boys demanded our attention which was a bit inconvienent (hah!) for me, who was trying to just catch a few more winks. We finally got up when Connor started screaming, Kai was launching himself off our bed and our tummy's were grumbling! Hello Sunday! I was not ready for you.
So we managed to pull off a great breakfast a la chef Jeff, and hot tea to cap it off but then the inevitable was staring me down: we needed to get outside to wear Kai down. But it was -17 degrees out so Jeff and I were really debating what to do and how to do it but in the end we bundled the boys and grabbed the tobaggan thus challenging mother nature to keep us cooped up.
We headed to the small park nearby where there's a community rink each winter, a play structure and a small incline for tobagganing. Kai had his first real attempt at catching some speed down a hill (I forgot my camera, but it was likely too cold for my fingers to function well anyhow).
Now, it should be noted that a couple of weeks ago, Jeff and Kai attempted to tobaggan in our front yard much to my horror. The golden rule of tobaggaining is to stay away from hills that head into traffic. Right? Does anyone NOT recall this GOLDEN rule from their childhood? Well there's one person... Jeff... and a few Sunday's ago, I saw Kai zipping down the small bump that is our front yard into the hockey net which was positioned at the edge of the sidewalk, just before the road. This was Jeff's idea for a barrier to prevent Kai from entering traffic!! WHAT?????. I was unimpressed. Everyone was 'safe', Kai loved it but I was horrified!! So needless to say the hill today was safe and appropriate for Kai. Although Kai even insists his first experience, "wasn't dangerous mom!" (Thanks Jeff!).
Our outing was good, Jeff and Kai attempted some tobaggan-style 'parkour' (random tobagging down anything that seemed like it could produce a gravitational pull). Connor screamed most of the outing and my legs were frost bitten the second I stepped out but all in all we survived.
The rest of the day involved the domestic duties of the Q-mom:
-Hot cocoa following the outdoor adventure
-A lunch of homemade soup: Barley, Lentil and Vegetable ( delicious!)
-Toffee Chocolate Crunchie cookies (with Kai's help)
-Laundry, clean up and major dishes!
I got to thinking: for as long as I can remember, the Sunday's of my childhood were punctuated by the background sounds of football, slow moving adults, napping and homemade dinners. It seemed that Sunday was the day that forced us to slow down and I used to hate it. I had energy to burn, and all of my childhood I would wonder what to do each Sunday and I usually found something: organizing, reading, dreaming about my future but not before I did some complaining to Mom ( Thanks Mom- I totally "get it" now!).
Ironically, it's no different now that I have a house and family of my own. Jeff has football (or whatever other sport) on the TV all day, and there's generally napping and always food. I find it comforting to have the TV on and I am no longer wondering what I should do with myself. I busy myself with the Q boys: baking, cleaning, blogging, taking pictures of the boys and still dreaming big!
Sunday's go way too fast and just when I want to start something new for myself, Kai wants to do a puzzle with me or Connor wants to feed on me or Jeff needs me to help him move something (today it was the freezer!). So while I'm busy, being pulled in 3 different directions, I am also completely fulfilled and it's in these moments that you can find me smiling, and inside I'm bursting with the tingles that this Sunday moment is exactly what I look forward to.
Here are some pictures from our Sunday, (minus the outdoor activities):
